Corpus Christi 10-14-08

No beach for us today. Its been raining all night and no let up in sight so our little caravan left this morning about 10am and drove to Corpus Christi to see the USS Lexington. I was only mildly surprised to read that to fuel the Lex it took 1.5 million gallons. But the fuel mileage was .0025mpg. Won't complain about our truck for awhile:) (1 mile on 400 gallons) Besides Greg drove today so I got great mileage :)
Susy and I took in an early movie they were showing so Greg and Judy roamed the ship by themselves until we finally met up on the flight deck a few hours later.
Many of the aircraft on the deck are modern, I have fond memories of the
Cobra helicopter gunship.
Greg and I took a simulator flight and got to fight the forces of EVIL. Hey we did ok - we came back alive!!
On the return trip Greg treated us to downtown Corpus Christi and along the waterfront. Then out to Mustang Island and then we rode the free ferry back to Aransas Pass.
We ate in Rockport at a little Mexican restaurant then settled in for the Obama/McCain debate.
What to believe???

Rockport Tx 10-13-08

Oh no I have definitely developed a disease!!
Its what Greg calls "CRS" and I have it bad. This lifestyle is so debiltating I don't even know what day it is. Thank goodness my trusty cell phone never forgets!
We spent the day driving around and ended up at the Rockport public beach. The park did not close until dark and there is a day use fee. We pulled up about 5pm and the gate attendant was trying to close up to go home so he just let us pass on through. How cool is that!?
We had an excellent time pretending we were still kids lol
The first pic shows why I don't care much about swimming. We saw several jellyfish in the water and on the shore. Yes I am a wuss.

Rockport Tx 10-13-08

Pulled 190 miles to Rockport Tx.
We really enjoy being near the water. The port area is so nice. Much cleaner looking water than when we visited Galveston a few years ago. Tomorrow we will explore some of the area.
After setting up camp, Judy made supper. She made stuffed chicken and fixins and it was Gooood! We have really enjoyed traveling with Greg and Judy and have learned alot about how to enjoy the RV lifestyle. Did I mention that we are staying here free as their guests! That is way cool too. Thanks Guys

Sattler TX 10-09 Thru 10-12-08

Now this is the way to do RVing. Traveled a grueling 80 miles to Sattler TX and pulled into the Rio Raft Resort. Had several nice walks along the Guadalupe River.
Today Stan & Connie Browning (old mustang 66) came over. Greg & Juday, Susy & I and Stan & Connie talked about RVing and HitchHikers. We all went to Gruene and had a nice lunch at The Gristmill.
Can't remember exactly when but in our site seeing we went to San Marcos because we were tired of the "free" internet that doesn't exist in parks. We went to Verizon and bought an air card then had a DQ lunch.
That night at our campsite we sat until well after dark sipping beeritas and resolving the presidential race and the financial crisis. We had a Great! Time.

LBJ Ranch 10-10-08

Today Susy and Juday went to Curves then did a little shopping in Fredericksburg., Greg helped me with somemaintenance work on the water heater and mastermining wiring Satelite and cable TV. Greg supplied me with RV maintenance schedule. Hopefully I won't let the water heater anode go that far again. A trip to the RV dealer on the south end of town made it good as new again.
we visited the LBJ Ranch which was just opened to the public in August.
The small Johnson cemetery is also on the same road. The ranch house known as the Texas White house is a nice large home with several additions. We watched a video, and looked into the only room you are allowed into, his west wing office. They threw some BIG parties there, You can see the front yard where he threw all his parties and held many many meetings under a 400 year old oak tree.
I've never eaten pecans right from the tree so we all ate several that fell from the trees by the cemetery.
Later we had a real good BBQ lunch. This was delicious! The best we've had in Texas.
Yes, Greg had to make room for lunch.
Later that night we graded the presidential debate.

Susy made us all lunch. MMmm I love that corned beef hash!

Fredericksburg TX 10-04-08

150 mile drive south to Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park for a 4 night stay. I must say this is the kind of travel day we enjoy the most. We parked along the fence facing the LBJ Airfield. It is a nice park. I actually snuck in a round of golf the next day and shot a 78. Great round for me. No I don't have any prood lol.
After we set up camp we went with Greg & Judy to downtown Fredericksburg for the Oktoberfest. It's a touristy German city with lots of shops that made the girls happy. Of course while here Susy and Judy visited Curves for Women.

Late arriving. Did I say we like to dawdle on the morning of travel usually pulling out around 11am. When we arrived Judy did chicken on the grill for supper for all of us

Friday we all went to Gainsville, TX to see fiberglass people and ventured to Muenster for a surprise. A glockenspiel, one of only a handful in the US.

That night we had a very nice visit with the Oklahoma HitchHikers club members who were also in the park for their October rally. We had a good time exchanging info with them.

200 miles to Gatesville, TX with Greg and Judy. Man! Nobody told me this traveling would be so taxing. No time to think about work or other non essential stuff like that!!

We ended up in a brand new gravel field for $20. Not bad for an overnighter before heading to Fredericksburg and the LBJ Ranch.

We all went out supper. We did find the "Last Drive In Movie Theatre" near our campground. It felt like a little bit of personal history. Also loved the historical courthouse downtown.

New to this blogging thing so I have some catching up to do now that we have an air card for internet access.
Thursday 10-02-2008, we met up with Greg and Judy Bahniller and Jeff and Susan Collingsworth at the Red River Ranch about 5 miles from the TX border. We all relaxed here before starting the trek to the TX hill country and the TX Gulf coast with Greg and Judy. We had a Great 1st day visiting before Jeff & Susan departed to visit family in Albany then heading back to California. Our very 1st min-rally!! Awesome
