1012-09-17 Devils Tower Wyoiming - Deadwood & Sturgis SD

Wow I really have some catching up to do today
We are back in KC for a visit and it is sure nice to have good
internet connection again

While in Hermosa SD we took a day trip to Wyoming with Stan & Connie
to see the US's 1st National Monument, Devil's Tower (Theodore Roosevelt 1906)
It is still considered sacred ground for the Lakota Indians.
It seems strange to spot this huge igneous rock formation while driving along the rolling hills
It was formed from volcanic activity some BZzzzillion years ago ( Yes it forget the actual date)
Over eons of time, the soft soil surrounding the hard igneous rock were eroded away,
It is majestic looking and well worth the trip

We hiked around the base in about an hour

Looking out from the base on the South side you can see
just how high up from the valley you really are
Surprising how much altitude can affect how much you huff & puff while just walking

There were definitely some that went higher than we did
You have to apply for a permit to climb the tower (drats !! haha)
We saw around 10 climbers this day
There have been rare fatality to climbers
After leaving Devil's Tower we ventured to Deadwood
Deadwood was established in 1876 during the Black Hills gold rush,
known as "Deadwood Gulch," because of the many dead trees that lined the canyon walls
The gold rush naturally attracted a crowd of rough and shady characters that made the early days of Deadwood rough and wild.
Mostly made up of men, a thriving economy of mining, many saloons, gambling and dance halls, and brothels. All were legitimate and well known businesses.
Mining was the major business in Deadwood and nearby Lead

After we left Deadwood we came around a curve to find traffic at a standstill
We didn't see what the hub bub was about unti we got out of the truck

We next went to Sturgis where year thousands of motorcycle enthusiast
gather every year for a bike rally

Ok, we didn't think it was 'All That'
I know from friends and stories it is totally different during a rally

Next stop will be Chanute Kansas the home of our rolling home
Cya There
